“I don’t know what you did, Miss Wright,” Dr. Davis said, approaching Jenny as she and Nate were cleaning up the classroom at the end of the day, “but please do it again tomorrow.”

Jenny blinked. Had that been a compliment from the principal? “I don’t think I did anything different today than on any other day.”

“You impressed Howard Perkins. He’s going to give a glowing report to the board this afternoon after he returns. That’s one in our corner. If I could, I’d give you a raise and a company car for that one.” Dr. Davis grinned. Actually grinned.

Had Dr. Davis been inhaling from the school’s helium tank? She looked happier than Jenny had ever seen her. “I’m very glad to hear that,” Jenny said. “I hope this means good things for Mercy Elementary.”

“You and I both, Miss Wright.” Dr. Davis gave Nate a nod. “I hear you were also instrumental in making this class great today, Mr. Dole. Mr. Perkins said you were a ‘wonderful addition to the classroom environment.’ That’s a direct quote, by the way.”

“Just doing my job,” he said.

“Well, I’ll see you both in the morning.” Then Dr. Davis walked off, humming a jaunty tune under her breath, a light step in her walk that hadn’t been there a week ago.

“What was in the school lunch today?” Jenny asked, returning to her desk now that the children were gone and the chairs put up for the night. “I’ve never seen her this happy.”

“Don’t knock it. It’s a nice change from earlier in the week. The dragon has become a dragonfly, I think.”

She grinned. “You are terrible.”

“I try.”

Jenny paused, the red grading pen in her hand. “I want to thank you for what you did with Perkins today. You...” She drew in a breath instead of finishing the sentence.

“Go ahead. You can say it. I was right.”

She pursed her lips. “I hate to admit that, you know.”

“Yep. But I love to hear it all the same.”

“Okay. I’ll say it. You were right. A little help, once in a while, isn’t bad.” Jenny directed her pen at him. “But I don’t need you fighting all my battles. I’m quite capable on my own.”

“I noticed that.” The tease in his eyes disappeared, replaced by something heated. “You’ve grown up into a hell of a woman, Jenny Wright.”

She inhaled, before she forgot to breathe. “And you’ve grown up, too. Into more of a man than you ever were.”

He grinned. “I wasn’t sure you’d noticed.”

She swallowed. “I noticed, Nate.” Every second of the day. In her dreams at night. In her thoughts, anticipating when he’d arrive in the classroom.

Oh yeah, she’d noticed.

When they’d broken up, they’d still essentially been kids at twenty years old. Jenny, a couple years into college, Nate partway through his first tour in the Marines. They’d barely known what they wanted out of life then. But now, they were adults, and knowing what they wanted wasn’t the problem. That, Jenny could see in Nate’s eyes, and feel in the answer churning within herself.
